Let me start off by introducing myself! I'm Kate Murray, also known as "Kakie". Growing up my Dad would yell in his British accent "KAAAAKIEEEE!!!" . To that I would come a runnin' and we would go off on an adventure whether it would be to violin lessons (tortured their ears up to book 3 of Suzuki), Dutchway Farm Market, or to the Tractor supply store. We also went Speaker shopping a lot (he NEVER BOUGHT ANYTHING).
I grew up on a Fallow Deer Farm in Lancaster County, PA. The very same farm my Mom grew up on (it was a dairy farm when she was a kid). I marched around as a nurse in the fields with my brothers (when they weren't looking I was a soldier with my own pretend bazooka gun). When left to play alone I had houses in bushes with branches that made the perfect shelves. I had rocks for ovens and made the BEST mud pie in town. Our property was known for it's Beech Tree. It was so big that I believe 18 Amish people climbed inside of it. There was a crack in the bottom I would slither in and stare up in amazement as I was engulfed by this huge tree and beams of sunlight would shine through the holes. It smelled of rotted wood and I usually lasted about 2 minutes MAXIMUM before I got scared and would scurry out to find that my brothers had set off all of the skunk cabbage surrounding the tree. This happened more than once. It was upsetting because it smelled but then I carried on my merry way surrounded by deer and woods and my imagination.
As an adult I have dedicated my life to working with adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. Building a relationship with a person with a disability is probably the most rewarding thing I have done in my life. I have found that I get much more out of the relationship than they do. Every time. Up until recently I was a Social Worker in NYC and one of my clients thought that my name was "Cake". He called me this for 5 years. I never corrected him because it was so similar to my name and it was what my dad called me. This is how the name Kakie's Craftery really came about.
In July 2012 I was no longer able to work after a medical procedure and have now had the chance to pursue the creative side of my brain. Thus far it has been an amazing journey! I am also getting married this year so I have TWO blogs. One dedicated to crafts kakiemurray.blogspot.com and the other to weddings kakiewedding.com. My fiancé is a wedding photographer (Michael Dempsey Photography www.dempseyphotography.com) and we live with the KING of all boston terriers OLIVER in Jersey City, NJ.
